Ford Fusion wins 2013 Green Car of the Year award

LOS ANGELES – The Green Car Journal announced its Green Car of the Year award at the Los Angeles Auto Show, choosing the Ford Fusion in a field of five finalists that included Toyota, Mazda, and Dodge.

The 2013 Ford Fusion mid-size sedan comes out with a wide array of drivetrain options, from a standard 2.5-liter engine to a plug-in hybrid system. With its base 2.5-liter four cylinder, the Fusion gets an EPA average of 26 mpg. Prospective buyers can also upgrade to either a 1.6-liter or 2-liter Ecoboost engine, each using direct injection and a turbocharger to turn in averages of 29 mpg and 26 mpg respectively.

The 2013 Fusion Hybrid uses a 2-liter engine combined with an electric motor, using energy recaptured from braking, to turn in 47 mpg, average, according to EPA testing. Ford says it is the most fuel efficient mid-size sedan in America. Ford also offers the Fusion Energi, which is a plug-in version of the Fusion Hybrid. Drivers will have the potential to get fuel economy much higher than 50 mpg, depending on how frequently they plug it in.

Nissan to introduce steer-by-wire cars in 2013

I can’t wait for cars to drive themselves, and here’s one more step in that direction.

Nissan wants to cut the mechanical link between the steering wheel and the tires on some of its 2013 automobiles with steer-by-wire technology. It could make driving more like playing a video game, or more of a full-on engagement with the road, depending who you ask.

The system would replace the conventional rack and pinion setup with one that controls the tire angles and steering inputs with independent electronic controls, similar to the trusted fly-by-wire interface in aircraft.

“This transmits the driver’s intentions to the wheels even faster than a mechanical system and increases the direct driving performance feel by quickly and intelligently communicating road surface feedback to the driver,” the automaker said in a release.

I can that imagine someone at Lamborghini thinks that the Aventador’s 700-horsepower split between all four wheels is probably enough power for one car. (And no, I don’t agree with that person.) I assume this because rather than getting a nominal power bump for this model year’s update, the 2013 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 gets a mile per gallon bump thanks to the addition of cylinder deactivation and idle stop-start technologies that allow the V-12 engine to instantaneously and momentarily make less power in the pursuit of using less fuel.

The Cylinder Deactivation System (CDS) works like this: When cruising or coasting at speeds below 85 mph, the Aventador shuts down one bank of its 6.5-liter, V-12 engine — essentially transforming the engine into a 3.25-liter, inline six-cylinder. You don’t need all 700 ponies for your daily commute, so by basically shrinking the engine on demand, Lamborghini is able to squeeze out a few more mpgs. When the user decides that it’s time to drop the hammer, the CDS fires the second bank of cylinders back up with no more interaction from the driver than an increase in pedal pressure and, presumably, no hesitation.
