2019 Toyota 4-Runner – Test Drive, Review, Specs

No Such Thing as Too Big

The Toyota 4-Runner takes the modern compact space out of the equation, but it’s got a whole lot more to offer than just abundant room. More specifically, building trucks is no new engineering territory for Toyota proven by the acclaimed Tacoma and Tundra. That said, the 4-runner was built to handle the rugged roots of off-roading with a true 4×4 system.

The base model generously seats 5 priced in at an MSRP of $46,155 but it’s the TRD Off-Road and TRD-Pro trims that ultimately takes the off-road spotlight. That gets you a locked rear differential, off-road tuned ABS system, dynamic suspensions and 4-wheel crawl control. Seating 7 with a third row seat is made possible with the Limited trim for $52,757

A True Off-Road Machine

When it comes to dirt, the 4-runner does not plagiarize. All trims get a monstrous 4.0L V6 producing 270 horsepower and 278 lb.ft of torque. The body-on-frame platform similar to that of the Jeep Wrangler is coupled with an advanced 4WD system. One of Toyota’s proprietary off-road technology employed is crawl control. This system utilizes wheel sensors to detect slippage that’s smart enough to figure out how much dirt or sand needs to be built up under the tire to crawl out of rough terrain.” In addition to that, the TRD-Pro trim comes with an additional option to lock the rear differentials for ultimate traction.

The part-time 4WD system means the 4Runner means all the engine torque is sent to the rear wheels in H2 mode. Switching to H4 mode engages the front wheels through a torque transfer case for additional torque and L4 for a lower gear ratio.

Engine speed and shift point can also be tuned on the fly via a turn-dial located on the roof-top console with the part-time 4×4 system in the SR5, Trail, or TRD models, or the full-time AWD in the Limited models allows you to select the final gear ratio in either High for normal city speed driving, or Low for additional torque with a maximum tow capacity of 5,000 lbs.

Practicality Remains

More than just off-roading capability, the 4-runner offers plenty of comfort and convenience. That includes 40-20-40 rear seats with maximum cargo capacity of 2,540 L, heated and ventilated front seats and 15-speaker JBL Audio system in the Limited model and up. And the leather wrapped steering and shifter knob adds a nice final touch for the overall experience.

Pet Peeves

While demonstrating outstanding off-roading capability, the 4-runner doesn’t come without pet peeves. The leather seating material is similar to that of a Prius and city and highway driving feels springy and unconnected to the road. And the dated transmission is only 5-speed, meaning poor acceleration and fuel economy – 13L / 100km city/highway combined.

Still, everyday city and highway driving is unlikely the only reason you’d buy the 4-runner, but in our books, a better balance with off-roading should considered.
