2021 Toyota Highlander – First Drive

The Highlander Defines the Ideal Modern SUV Populous

It’s big, it’s practical and above, has got exceptional fuel economy and that alone, gives the Toyota Highlander a leg up above its competitors. The three-row full-size SUV offers plenty of options and configurations to perfectly tailor any family needs. Base models receive a standard V-6 powertrain with an exclusive availability of a hybrid powertrain that’s practically unheard of in the 3-row passenger cross-over SUV segment. Although plenty of old and newcomers offer good alternatives such as the Mazda CX-9, Kia Telluride, or the Hyundai Palisade, the Highlander still offers plenty of luxury comfort and tech features as well.

New for 2021 includes a new XSE trim that offers more aggressive looks with larger 20″ wheels, black exterior and enhanced suspension tuning. Other than that, the Highlander receives more standard features including projection LED headlamps, driver assistance, and semi-autonomous emergency steering control for collision avoidance.

Powertrain

Standard models receive a naturally aspirated 3.5L V6 engine producing 295 horsepower via an 8-speed automatic gear box. North American trims are limited to all-wheel drive while buyers in the US can opt for a front-wheel drive configuration if added traction and stability is not needed.

A 2.5L hybrid powertrain is also offered by the Highlander for improved fuel economy. Combine with two working AC induction motor and a CVT transmission in lieu, the Highlander hybrid powertrain produces 243 horsepower. While the horsepower is significantly less, the Hybrid powertrain still provides adequate low-end torque and substantially better EPA-rated fuel economy 35 mpg city and highway combined as opposed to a non-hybrid powertrain that only gets 27 mpg. That’s 22% savings at the fuel pump.

Interior and Tech Features

Base models offer 8 passengers with the availability of a 7-passenger configuration if the second row seats are fitted with two captain seats instead. Thanks to its box-like form factor, the Highlander offers a spacious interior even for third row passengers.

Toyota isn’t renowned for its cabin interiors, but the Highlander pleases with well-graded materials, soft perforated leather seats and a functional center console fitted with an oversized 12.3″ infotainment touchscreen with the Limited and Platinum trim. Also included is an upgraded 11 speaker JBL audio system, 4G LTE cellular hotspot support, and Amazon Alexa voice navigation software. Lower base models get a smaller 8″ infotainment touchscreen, but is still compatible with both Android Auto and Apple Carplay

Test Drive and Final Thoughts

Despite its large footprint, the Highlander is surprisingly easy to maneuver thanks to its high-up seating position, responsive steering and smooth and predictable power from the hybrid powertrain under test. Front seat arrangements offer exceptionally plush comfort and power delivery from the hybrid powertrain works harmonously between its onboard 2.5L 4 cylinder engine and duo AC induction motors.

While the Highlander isn’t off-road rated, it still has a decent amount of ground clearance to tackle some terrain where roads end. That said, the shear space and practicality the Highlander has to offer are primary reasons for its high demand and popular status. Our Hybrid tester model comes priced in at $39,950.
