Mild-mannered Chevy Malibu sedan features modern, smartphone interface

Ford is making much ado about the Mustang’s 50th birthday this year, and yet Chevy isn’t throwing the Malibu, which also launched in 1964, much of a party. Among the reasons for this lack of acclaim: the Malibu was more of a trim level than a distinct model when it launched; Chevy released a major update for the 2013 model rather than holding the update for a celebratory year; and the Malibu is a sedan rather than a more emotionally appealing coupe.

The 2014 Chevy Malibu, in its current styling, doesn’t look like it’s up for a party. The conservative styling suggests going to bed at 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. Compared to the Ford Fusion and the Mazda6, two more attractive designs in the mid-size sedan segment, the Malibu’s styling works more as suburban camouflage. The Malibu won’t stand out much in the parking lot, but then, some people prefer a less ostentatious ride.

‘Really slow’ Chevy Sonic offers high-tech for small budgets

The Chevrolet Sonic is a simple car. For a reasonable price, you get four seats and a hatchback, a reasonably powered engine, and a pretty good infotainment setup. On paper, there’s not much to go wrong or terribly right either with this followup to the frankly dull Aveo hatchback with which we’re familiar.

Between you and me (and the rest of the Internet), I’m a huge fan of B-segment vehicles. There’s something about the low entry cost, the cleverness of the packaging, and the potential for low-speed thrills that I just get. I’m more of a “drive a slow car fast” kind of guy.

As they say, the devil’s in the details. Look more closely at our 2013 Chevrolet Sonic RS and you’ll find a number of interesting gems: That reasonably powered engine is force-fed via a turbocharger. The hatchback design sits atop a sporty suspension. And the pretty-good infotainment system is remarkably cutting-edge in its own way, having more in common with an Android tablet or iPad Mini than your average dashboard stereo.

No one listens to CDs anymore The Chevy Sonic is an interesting intersection of low-tech cost savings and high-tech thinking. Depending on the trim level and options chosen, the Sonic can be had with manual, crank windows and a 7-inch touch-screen infotainment system. Lots of new product this week: The (dramatically) new 2014 Chevy Impala and the equally new Range Rover Sport. I tested the Impala personally and I came away liking it a lot, but feeling it has a bit of the old car’s DNA. Chevy sedan shakes off rental-car stigma

“You’re driving an Impala this week, eh? Yeah, I rented one of those on my last vacation/business trip/etc.,” said everyone I ran into (not like that) when testing the 2014 Chevrolet Impala LT2 this week. It seems that everyone I know has rented one, but no one actually knows anyone that owns one. This experience is anecdotal, of course, but it certainly isn’t a good thing for the classic American nameplate.

For 2014, the Impala reaches the market with a new look and a new high-tech message that I think is a big step in the right direction. There’s nothing dull about the the Impala’s new angry face and the muscular proportions inject the nameplate with a healthy dose of machismo that’s been missing since the Impala was neutered switched to a FF platform back in 2000.

Parked side-by-side at a local strip mall, the 2014 Impala is more memorable than the Camry or Accord, more menacing than the Mazda6 and Taurus. Stylistically speaking, this comeback is off to a very good start.

New generation MyLink infotainment Dating back to 1958, the Impala is Chevrolet’s second-oldest nameplate (preceded only by the Corvette), so I find it amusing that it is the model that ushers in the newest generation of Chevrolet’s MyLink infotainment technology.

Electric car price war? Chevy chimes in with Volt incentives

Chevrolet is offering a sizable price incentive in the face of price slashing in the electric car market.

The 2013 Volt now comes with a $ 4,000 cash-back incentive and the 2012 model ups that to $ 5,000, according to Michelle Malcho, a Chevrolet spokeswoman.

That’s the largest Volt cash incentive that Chevy has offered to date, Malcho said.

Alternatively, a Volt can now be leased for $ 269 a month for 36 months with a $ 2,399 down payment.

The Volt is a plug-in hybrid (GM refers to it as an extended-range electric vehicle or E-REV) with a range of about 40 miles on electric power and another 300 to 400 miles on the range-extender gas engine.

The base price is $ 39,995 but — in addition to the new Chevy incentives — the Volt comes with other cash-back incentives and tax credits to effectively bring the price far below what’s on the sticker. That includes a federal tax credit of $ 7,500 (if you buy the vehicle) and a $ 1,500 cash incentive in California.

Next gen Chevy MyLink employs smartphone flexibility

LAS VEGAS–Cabin tech interface receive a lot of criticism for being clunky, ugly, and slow, but Chevrolet may have cracked the code by copying the smartphone. The newest generation of the MyLink infotainment system runs smoothly and employs icons that look, and can be rearranged, like those on a smartphone.

Similar to an iPhone, drivers of the new Impala will be able to put the interface into edit mode, and move icons around on the touchscreen. The icons cover everything from navigation to phone to apps such as Pandora. To make the system better suited to cars, there are only eight icons per screen.

For quick access to functions such as navigation, drivers will be able to save up to four icons to an upper strip on the interface. Those icons will remain static as the driver goes into different functions, such as music playback menus.

Siri to make automobile debut on Chevy Spark, Sonic

Siri’s full functionality is coming to two Chevrolet cars next year, General Motors announced today at the Los Angeles International Auto Show.

Siri will be available to customers who buy the Chevrolet Spark and Sonic. The virtual personal assistant connects wirelessly with the Chevy MyLink infotainment system, and allows folks running the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 with iOS 6 to perform a host of Siri-related tasks.

According to Chevrolet, Siri will be available in Eyes Free mode, letting users make voice-activated calls, access their calendars, and listen to and compose text messages. However, Eyes Free mode won’t allow Siri to answer “complex questions that require displaying a Web page.” To further mitigate distraction, the iPhone screen won’t light up when Siri is interacting with the user.
